The CHUKKA Legacy
The CHUKKA Legacy
From the rhythmic gallops on a polo field to the serene strides on the sun-kissed shores of Jamaica, CHUKKA embodies more than just a name; it’s a journey, a legacy. In the 1980s, Danny Melville, a polo aficionado, brought life to the polo fields of Ocho Rios with captivating matches every Saturday. The magic continued on Sundays when polo players allowed their horses to refresh and relax in the gentle waters of Mammee Bay. This experience resonated not just with international polo enthusiasts but also held a special place in Danny's family's heart.
Recognizing the wonder these equestrian moments evoked, Danny inaugurated a polo and equestrian center in 1983. Here, he extended this unique horse-based joy to tourists. This gave birth to the legendary Horseback Ride ‘N’ Swim—a pioneering adventure tour in Jamaica. Even after four decades, this signature tour remains testament to our commitment to crafting unparalleled experiences.
Embracing the spirit of transition and family continuity, Danny eventually handed over the reins to his polo-playing sons—Alexander, Marc, and Daniel. Alongside their childhood friend, John Byles, this dynamic team now helms the company, ensuring the legacy Danny built continues to thrive.
But why the name CHUKKA? In polo, a "chukka" signifies a period of play, such as a quarter in basketball. Just as a polo match teems with excitement and the rush of adrenaline, CHUKKA as a brand captures that same spirit of adventure. It's not only about the thrill but also the marvel, akin to witnessing a horse delight in its swim. Immerse yourself in our story and embrace the CHUKKA legacy.
