When in Belize…
Mexico is famous for its tequila while Cuba knows how to make a mean mojito. In Belize, rum is king.
When it comes to rum distributors, Travellers Liquors in Belize City is considered local royalty. Travellers is home of the world-famous One Barrel Rum, as well as more than 20 additional types of rum, vodka and liqueur. A family-run business for more than 60 years, many of the recipes have been passed down for generations.
In 1953, Jaime Omario Perdomo Sr. opened a bar in Belize City called Travellers. He initially sold imported liquors and beers as well as locally made rums. As Travellers rums grew in popularity, the recipe for the award winning ONE BARREL aged rum was developed.
During the 70s, Don Omario’s sons, Romel and Mayito, joined him in the family business, and in 1983 Don Omario decided to register Travellers as a limited company naming his children as shareholders.
Since then the distillery has been upgraded and Travellers now exports to Europe, Canada and the United States. At the Heritage Centre in Belize City, you can learn more about the history of rum in Belize and please your taste buds with some samples.
General Manager Amanda Perdomo, daughter of the company founder, greeted us at the entrance. Archival photos from the early days hang on the walls, and numerous pieces of original distillery equipment are on display.
As you stroll through the Heritage Centre, you can read about the origins of the company or watch the present day staff members at work in the bottling plant. Travellers re-uses all liquor bottles produced in their factory, and all bottles purchased are recyclable.
Once you’ve studied up, rum tasting awaits. Dozens of options are lined up on a bar in the back room, and the bartender will help you choose those you might be more apt to enjoy. We highly recommend the popular Rum Cream and Tropical Belizean Craboo Cream for those who like a little treat in your morning coffee.
If you’re looking for the aged rum, you’ll find that in the warehouse. Stacked in wooden barrels, Travellers distributes two vintage rums, as well as three aged dark rums. Don Omario 15-year Royal Edition was released for Prince Harry’s visit to Belize in 2012.
All of the rums and liqueurs you taste at Travellers are available in the gift shop on-site, as well as t-shirts and other merchandise. They even have a deliciously potent homemade rum cake in original and tropical flavours.
In fact, the hardest part about a trip to Travellers Liquor is trying to limit how much you take with you when you leave.
