Appleton Rum Bar

Best Rum in Jamaica

I propose a toast!

Let us now raise our glasses to those excellent sugar mill operators who discovered how to make rum out of molasses. Your discovery gave the world a drink that is as synonymous with Jamaica as Bob Marley, jerk cooking, and Dunn’s River Falls.

Rum goes back a long way in Jamaica. In fact Appleton Jamaica, which dates back to 1749, is the second-oldest rum producer in the world.

Back then, the English estate owners called the drink “rumbullion,” which means “great tumult.” Some say that’s a reference to the hangover you’d get if you drank too much in one sitting.

Today there are white rums, spiced rums, dark rums, overproof rums, extra-old rums… so many to choose from.

So how do you choose?

Well, if you’re on the Good Hope Estate, take the rum tour at the Appleton Estate Rum Bar and sample some of the island’s finest. That’s what we did. But be careful how much you sample. Wouldn’t want to wind up in a rumbullion, would you?
